Royal Rumble 2023 is a four-hour event with roughly twelve minutes of bad wrestling and several months of WWE history packed around it. The men's Royal Rumble gives Cody Rhodes the obvious victory while making Gunther look like the more astonishing performer, the women's match turns Rhea Ripley into an iron-woman winner, and Roman Reigns versus Kevin Owens exists partly to place Sami Zayn in front of one steel chair. That chair ends up mattering more than any championship on the card.

The men's Rumble is the wrestling peak. Gunther enters first, survives for more than seventy minutes and then gives Cody a genuine final-match sequence after the field has emptied, which is a much better ending than simply waiting for the favorite to dump the last body. Brock Lesnar's short explosion, Judgment Day's control stretch, Edge's return and Logan Paul's athletic cameo keep the middle from becoming anonymous.

The women's Rumble is less consistently sharp but has an even cleaner central performance. Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan begin the match and become the final two, while Asuka's return, Damage CTRL's sustained presence, Michelle McCool's front-row entrance and several NXT cameos give the hour enough texture. Ripley's headscissors elimination of Morgan is a worthy finish to a record-setting night.

The two short singles matches in the middle are the tax. Bray Wyatt versus LA Knight is a visually distinctive sponsored spectacle that never becomes good wrestling, and Bianca Belair versus Alexa Bliss feels like an obligatory championship defense attached to another supernatural teaser. Together they consume little time, but they create the show's only sustained dead zone.

Then Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens deliver a good title match and the Bloodline delivers something much bigger. Sami Zayn refuses to hit Owens, strikes Reigns with the chair, gets destroyed for it, and watches Jey Uso walk away rather than join the beating. WrestleFile lands at B+ / 8.4 because Royal Rumble 2023 is uneven as a card but exceptional as a launch point for WrestleMania season.

Event ContextBackground, stakes & historical setting

Royal Rumble 2023 took place on January 28, 2023 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Alamodome ticket audits later showed 42,928 fans scanned into the building and 44,569 tickets sold, while WWE announced 51,338 people during the broadcast. The show was the thirty-sixth annual Royal Rumble and the fourth edition held in San Antonio.

Five matches were contested. For the first time in Royal Rumble history, the men's Royal Rumble match opened the event rather than appearing later on the card, with Cody Rhodes returning from a torn pectoral injury to win from the number thirty position. Gunther entered first and lasted 1:11:40, setting the then-record for a traditional thirty-man Rumble.

Rhea Ripley won the women's Royal Rumble after entering at number one and lasting 1:01:08. She and number-two entrant Liv Morgan became the final two, making this one of the rare Rumble matches where the opening pair both survived until the closing exchange. Ripley's victory sent her toward Charlotte Flair and the SmackDown Women's Championship at WrestleMania 39.

Roman Reigns defended the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Kevin Owens in the main event. Sami Zayn entered the night as the Bloodline member whose loyalty remained under examination, and the post-match attack on Owens finally forced him to choose between Reigns and his former best friend. His chair shot to Reigns became the event's defining moment.

The remaining matches were Bray Wyatt against LA Knight in the Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match and Bianca Belair defending the Raw Women's Championship against Alexa Bliss. Wyatt's match became his final televised bout before his death in August 2023, adding historical weight that was impossible to know on the night. That later context does not change the match grade.

    The Card, On the Record

    01Cody Rhodes won the Men's Royal Rumble MatchA

    The men's Royal Rumble opens with Gunther and Sheamus, which gives the match instant credibility before the countdown clock has a chance to become the main character. Gunther's presence gradually becomes the spine of the entire seventy-one minutes. Every new entrant is partly measured against the man who has already been there longer.

    The middle is busy without becoming anonymous. Brock Lesnar enters, wrecks people and is eliminated quickly by Bobby Lashley; Finn Bálor and Judgment Day gain control; Edge returns and immediately reignites his feud; Logan Paul gives the match its most spectacular collision with Ricochet. The stories are easy to follow because each cluster has a clear purpose.

    There are imperfections. Kofi Kingston's attempted save with the commentary chair looks awkward, Rey Mysterio never reaches the ring, and the enormous entrance ramp occasionally drains urgency from the countdown. The match survives all three because its central performances remain strong.

    Cody Rhodes enters at number thirty with no surprise attached to his return. Instead of pretending the favorite is an underdog, the match gives him a long final exchange with Gunther after Seth Rollins and Logan Paul are eliminated. That decision turns the ending into an actual singles-match climax rather than a ceremonial final toss.

    Cagematch currently rates the match 7.51 from 715 votes, and the Observer reported 4.25 stars. Hall gave it an A- and later retrospectives repeatedly single out Gunther's performance and the final two as the key strengths. WrestleFile lands at A / 9.1 for one of the strongest modern Royal Rumble matches.

    VERDICT

    An excellent modern Rumble built around Gunther's marathon and a final Cody-Gunther duel that makes the obvious winner feel earned.

    02Bray Wyatt def. LA Knight — Mountain Dew Pitch Black MatchD-

    The Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match is five minutes of wrestling designed around a visual concept rather than a competitive idea. The black light makes Bray Wyatt's body paint and LA Knight's gear glow, and the neon presentation is undeniably distinctive. Distinctive is not the same as good.

    Knight throws himself through the announce table and uses a kendo stick, while Wyatt controls most of the actual match with basic power offense. The anything-goes stipulation never develops enough escalation to justify the elaborate setup. Sister Abigail ends the sanctioned portion before the match has found a real rhythm.

    The post-match sequence is even more committed to spectacle. Wyatt puts on another mask, stalks Knight into the crowd, applies the Mandible Claw and watches Uncle Howdy dive from an elevated platform as pyrotechnics explode. It is closer to a themed attraction than a wrestling payoff.

    The later knowledge that this became Wyatt's final televised match makes the footage emotionally different to revisit. That context deserves acknowledgment without changing what happened bell to bell. A career's tragic ending should not be used to inflate or punish a match grade.

    Cagematch currently rates the match 2.09 from 606 votes, and the Observer reported 0.75 stars. It was also later selected as the Observer's worst match of 2023, reflecting how strongly the sponsored spectacle divided viewers. WrestleFile lands at D- / 4.1.

    VERDICT

    A visually memorable sponsored spectacle that never develops into a satisfying wrestling match, despite its later historical poignancy.

    03Bianca Belair def. Alexa Bliss — Raw Women's ChampionshipD

    Bianca Belair and Alexa Bliss are placed in the hardest spot on the card: directly after the Pitch Black spectacle and directly before another hour-long Royal Rumble. The championship match needs urgency to reclaim the room. Instead it feels like a short television defense transported into a stadium.

    Belair works with her usual athletic control while Bliss tries to use the possibility of her darker persona as an edge. The story has spent weeks suggesting that Bray Wyatt imagery may pull Bliss in another direction, but the wrestling never makes that uncertainty feel dangerous to the champion. Belair remains the obvious favorite throughout.

    The finish is clean and efficient. Bliss tries to create an opening for Sister Abigail, Belair counters and the KOD ends the match in under eight minutes. A decisive championship defense is preferable to unnecessary interference, but decisiveness cannot manufacture drama that never existed.

    The post-match video immediately returns the focus to Uncle Howdy and Bliss' psychological state. That makes the Raw Women's Championship feel secondary to a supernatural storyline that does not ultimately reach a satisfying destination. The match is remembered less for what happened than for what was teased afterward.

    Cagematch currently rates the match 3.41 from 468 votes, and the Observer reported 1.5 stars. Later reviews generally identify it with Wyatt-Knight as the dead zone between the two Rumbles. WrestleFile lands at D / 4.7.

    VERDICT

    A clean but flat championship defense that never makes Alexa Bliss feel like a credible threat to Bianca Belair.

    04Rhea Ripley won the Women's Royal Rumble MatchB+

    Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan enter first and second, which gives the women's Rumble a structural promise the match eventually keeps. Both women survive for more than an hour and become the final two. That symmetry turns endurance into the match's central story rather than a statistic discovered afterward.

    The middle is more uneven than the men's Rumble but contains several useful chapters. Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY give Damage CTRL a sustained control stretch, Becky Lynch remains their natural counterweight, and Asuka returns with a more dangerous presentation. Michelle McCool entering from her front-row seat gives the match a rare spontaneous feel.

    There are stretches with too many wrestlers and too little direction. Some entrants disappear into the ring until the next elimination cluster, and Nia Jax's number-thirty arrival is undercut by the production countdown appearing before she is ready. The hour is good rather than consistently great.

    The final sequence is excellent. Morgan eliminates Nikki Cross, Asuka accidentally blinds Morgan with mist, Ripley eliminates Asuka and then survives Morgan's Codebreaker while hanging from the ropes. Ripley's headscissors sends Morgan to the floor and gives the match a finish built on athletic control rather than a lucky shove.

    Cagematch currently rates the match 6.64 from 582 votes, and the Observer reported 3.5 stars. The performance grows in importance because Ripley turns the victory into a defining WrestleMania run. WrestleFile lands at B+ / 8.1.

    VERDICT

    A strong hour-long Rumble carried by Rhea Ripley's endurance and an excellent closing sequence with Asuka and Liv Morgan.

    05Roman Reigns def. Kevin Owens — Undisputed WWE Universal ChampionshipB+

    Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens are wrestling under the shadow of a story that does not technically involve the challenger winning. Everyone knows the championships are likely staying with Reigns, and the real uncertainty is what Sami Zayn will do when Roman eventually demands proof of loyalty. The match still has to earn the right to reach that moment.

    Owens gives Reigns enough resistance to keep the nineteen minutes competitive. A pop-up powerbomb lands while the referee is down, Sami hesitates when Roman asks for a chair, and Owens gets a Stunner near fall after that delay. The sequences are familiar to their rivalry but executed with strong crowd investment.

    Reigns gradually turns the finish into punishment rather than competition. He Spears Owens through the barricade, repeatedly drives his head into the steps and finally ends the match with another Spear after Owens defiantly slaps him. The champion looks less relieved than offended by the challenge.

    Then the match becomes history. Owens is handcuffed to the ropes, Sami refuses to strike him and finally drives the chair into Reigns' back, echoing one of the most recognizable betrayal images in wrestling. Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa attack Sami while Jey Uso walks away, emotionally splitting the Bloodline without a word.

    Cagematch currently rates Reigns-Owens at 7.58 from 604 votes, and the Observer reported 3.5 stars. Bleacher Report graded the match lower than the A+ aftermath, while other contemporary reviews similarly distinguished the solid title defense from the extraordinary angle. WrestleFile lands at B+ / 8.2 for the match and treats the post-match segment as a major part of the event-level grade.

    VERDICT

    A strong but predictable title defense whose excellent brutality becomes the runway for an all-time Bloodline closing angle.

    BOOKING VERDICTA-

    Royal Rumble 2023 gets the two most important winners right. Cody Rhodes is the obvious men's winner because WWE has spent weeks advertising his return, yet the match smartly gives Gunther the performance people remember alongside him. The favorite wins without the rest of the field feeling like scenery.

    Rhea Ripley's victory is even cleaner. Entering first gives her an endurance story, while Bayley, Dakota Kai and IYO SKY advance Damage CTRL's rivalry with Becky Lynch inside the match. Ripley eliminating Asuka and Liv Morgan in the closing sequence makes the win feel earned rather than assigned.

    The men's Rumble also uses eliminations to start or continue WrestleMania programs. Bobby Lashley dumps Brock Lesnar, Logan Paul eliminates Seth Rollins, and Finn Bálor and Judgment Day's attack on Edge continues after elimination until Beth Phoenix arrives. The match is highly engineered, but the machinery mostly produces useful television rather than interrupting the contest.

    The weaker decisions sit in the middle. The Pitch Black Match is more sponsorship activation than competitive payoff, while Belair and Bliss receive too little time to make the championship challenge convincing. Both matches also end with supernatural imagery that feels disconnected from the more grounded stories carrying the rest of the show.

    The main-event booking is excellent even though Reigns retaining is never seriously in doubt. WWE understands that the real suspense is whether Sami will obey Roman after the bell, and the refusal finally cashes months of Bloodline character work. Jey Uso walking away instead of joining the attack adds a second emotional consequence without cluttering the central moment.

    CROWD & PRESENTATIONA+

    Crowd & Presentation Grade: A+. The Alamodome gives Royal Rumble 2023 the oversized feeling the event benefits from, and the audience remains responsive through two hour-long battle royals and a late main event. Cody's return, Edge's entrance, Asuka's new presentation and the Bloodline ending all receive major-event reactions.

    The men's Rumble is presented with enough star power to survive a lack of shocking surprise entrants. Gunther and Sheamus begin with immediate credibility, Brock Lesnar arrives as a short natural disaster, and Cody's number-thirty entrance still feels important despite being advertised in advance. The final one-on-one stretch gives the match a focused closing visual after seventy minutes of crowd management.

    The Pitch Black Match is visually striking even when the wrestling is not. Black light, fluorescent gear and Wyatt's body paint create images unlike anything else on the show, while the post-match Uncle Howdy dive and pyrotechnics push the presentation toward theme-park spectacle. The problem is not that it looks cheap; the problem is that the look becomes more memorable than the contest.

    The women's Rumble benefits from clear presentation of Ripley's endurance. She remains visible throughout the hour, the clock becomes part of her story, and the closing sequence with Asuka and Morgan gives the audience an easy final hierarchy to follow. Michelle McCool entering from the front row is also the kind of spontaneous-looking Royal Rumble moment the match format rewards.

    Nothing on the show matches the final Bloodline segment. The pause before Sami swings the chair, the explosion when he hits Reigns, Jey's emotional exit and the prolonged beating all register because the crowd understands every relationship without explanation. It is one of the strongest pieces of live WWE presentation of the decade.

    HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCEA

    Historical Significance Grade: A. Royal Rumble 2023 launches three of WrestleMania 39's central stories in one night. Cody Rhodes wins the men's Rumble, Rhea Ripley wins the women's Rumble and Sami Zayn finally breaks from Roman Reigns and The Bloodline.

    Cody's victory sends him directly toward Reigns and the WrestleMania main event. The final stretch also elevates Gunther, whose seventy-plus-minute performance becomes a major part of his growing main-roster reputation and a benchmark for later Rumble endurance records. The result is predictable because WWE has built the correct destination.

    Ripley's victory is a major step in her transformation into one of WWE's defining stars. Winning from number one and surviving more than an hour gives the accomplishment a statistical identity, while choosing Charlotte Flair creates a direct sequel to Ripley's WrestleMania 36 defeat. She wins the SmackDown Women's Championship at WrestleMania and becomes increasingly central to Judgment Day afterward.

    The Bloodline angle has even larger narrative consequences. Sami's chair shot leads to Reigns versus Zayn at Elimination Chamber, the eventual reunion of Zayn and Kevin Owens, and their WrestleMania Saturday main event against The Usos. Jey Uso walking away adds the next fracture that ultimately feeds the Bloodline Civil War.

    The event is also Bray Wyatt's final televised match. That fact is tragic historical context rather than a retroactive argument for the match's quality, but it ensures the Pitch Black Match will remain part of Wyatt's career record. Royal Rumble 2023 therefore contains both planned turning points and one significance no one could have anticipated.

    WHAT AGED WELL
    • The men's Royal Rumble has aged well because the obvious winner does not flatten the match around him. Gunther becomes the central performance, Cody earns the final elimination through a substantial one-on-one sequence, and several WrestleMania programs begin without hijacking the structure. The lack of mystery about number thirty matters less when the closing wrestling is this good.
    • Rhea Ripley's women's Rumble performance looks even more important with distance. The endurance record was later broken, but the match still captures the moment WWE fully commits to presenting Ripley as a franchise-level star. Liv Morgan lasting alongside her from number two also gives the finish symmetry that most Rumbles cannot manufacture.
    • The Bloodline closing angle remains extraordinary. Months of small Sami Zayn loyalty tests become understandable in one image when Roman hands him the chair, and the story trusts silence long enough for the crowd to process the decision. Jey Uso's exit prevents the segment from becoming a simple hero-versus-villains tableau.
    • The show also benefits from its correct WrestleMania direction. Cody and Rhea both receive clear paths immediately, while Lashley-Lesnar, Rollins-Paul and Edge-Judgment Day all leave San Antonio with next steps. Very little important booking is wasted.
    • The event's business success also holds up as evidence of WWE's momentum entering 2023. WWE reported a record Royal Rumble gate and a 52 percent viewership increase over the prior event record, while the Bloodline clips generated enormous social engagement. The creative peak and commercial surge happened at the same time.
    WHAT AGED POORLY
    • The Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match remains the obvious wrestling failure. The black-light presentation creates distinctive images, but five minutes of basic brawling never justifies the elaborate branding or the long supernatural post-match sequence. The spectacle overwhelms the match instead of enhancing it.
    • Bianca Belair versus Alexa Bliss is less bizarre and almost as forgettable. The champion wins cleanly in under eight minutes, the result never feels uncertain, and the post-match Uncle Howdy material shifts attention away from the Raw Women's Championship. A major title defense becomes connective tissue for another story.
    • The long entrance ramp hurts both Rumbles at times. The delay between music hitting and wrestlers reaching the ring softens the immediate impact that makes surprise entrances so useful to the format. It is especially noticeable during stretches when the ring already contains many bodies and the countdown is doing most of the pacing work.
    • The men's match also has a few awkward elimination ideas. Kofi Kingston's attempted chair save does not land as intended, Rey Mysterio's missing entrance creates a number-slot oddity, and Edge is eliminated from outside after already eliminating Judgment Day members. None ruins the match, but the seams are visible.
    • The event is also long enough that the Hardy performance before the main event feels like a deliberate intermission. A live stadium show can absorb that reset more easily than a home rewatch. The strongest version of Royal Rumble 2023 is the one that moves quickly from the women's Rumble into Reigns, Owens and Sami.
    RESEARCH VERDICTWhere the Evidence Lands

    Critical opinion consistently separates the three major pieces of Royal Rumble 2023 from its two short middle matches. Thomas Hall scored the event 8/10 for 411Mania and called the men's Rumble one of the better versions of the match, while The Pop Break also landed at 8/10. Pro Wrestling Dot Net's readers gave the event an A as the leading grade with 47 percent of the vote, ahead of B at 37 percent.

    Current Cagematch voting places the event at 6.72/10 from 440 valid votes. The match guide rates Roman Reigns versus Kevin Owens at 7.58 from 604 votes, the men's Royal Rumble at 7.51 from 715, the women's Royal Rumble at 6.64 from 582, Bianca Belair versus Alexa Bliss at 3.41 from 468 and Bray Wyatt versus LA Knight at 2.09 from 606. That spread matches the basic critical shape of the show unusually well.

    Reported Wrestling Observer ratings follow the same hierarchy. The men's Rumble received 4.25 stars, the women's Rumble and Reigns-Owens each received 3.5, Belair-Bliss received 1.5 and Wyatt-Knight received 0.75. The two weakest matches last only about thirteen combined minutes, which limits their damage to the total event.

    The main event is a useful example of why event grading cannot be reduced to match averages. CBS Sports gave the complete main-event presentation an A+ assessment, while Bleacher Report separated the solid match from an A+ post-match angle. The critical distinction is consistent: the bell-to-bell wrestling is good, but Sami Zayn's betrayal is what makes the segment historic.

    WrestleFile lands at B+ / 8.4. The men's Rumble is excellent, the women's Rumble is strong, the championship main event is good, the closing angle is elite and the WrestleMania direction is unusually productive. Two weak short matches and an overlong overall presentation keep the event below A territory.
