Royal Rumble 2024: Cody Rhodes Repeats, Bayley Finally Wins, and WrestleMania Finds Its Road

Bayley winning the women's Rumble is the night's cleanest booking decision. She enters third, survives more than an hour and eliminates Liv Morgan last, turning years of Damage CTRL tension into a direct road toward IYO SKY and WrestleMania XL. The match also gives Bayley a signature career accomplishment that had somehow remained missing.

Jade Cargill's debut is handled carefully. She enters late, eliminates Nia Jax in a major power spot and reaches the final three without being asked to carry long stretches of the match. WWE establishes her as important without forcing the audience to pretend she is already the finished product.

Cody Rhodes winning the men's Rumble for a second straight year is the riskier call and ultimately the right one. Repeating a Rumble winner can feel lazy, but Cody's unresolved WrestleMania 39 loss means repetition is the point: he has to earn another path to Roman Reigns rather than inherit one. The final exchange with Punk gives the win enough uncertainty to avoid feeling ceremonial.

The championship matches are less satisfying. Reigns once again benefits from Solo Sikoa interference in a match where the challengers never feel like genuine title-change possibilities, while Logan Paul retains by disqualification after Kevin Owens uses brass knuckles that were introduced by Paul's allies. Both results advance stories, but both also reinforce WWE's 2024 habit of asking interference to do too much work.

The men's Rumble also spends too much of its middle portion on utility entrants and side feuds. The final six largely repair the pacing, and Bron Breakker's short run is excellent, but the match waits a long time to reveal its true priorities.

Tropicana Field gives the Royal Rumble a huge visual footprint, but the crowd is inconsistent. Bayley's victory, Naomi's return, Jade Cargill's debut and the late stages of the men's match receive major reactions, while several middle stretches sound oddly muted for one of WWE's most anticipated annual events. The stadium scale sometimes magnifies that silence.

The women's Rumble handles surprises especially well. Jordynne Grace arriving with the TNA Knockouts World Championship instantly makes the crossover feel more significant than a generic nostalgia appearance, while Jade's presentation tells the audience to treat her as a future centerpiece before she has wrestled a standard WWE match. Naomi's return provides the emotional opening hook.

The fatal four-way looks appropriately major during entrances, but the atmosphere fades once everyone realizes the match is heading toward the familiar Bloodline-interference structure. Orton's RKO on Reigns briefly creates the night's best false title change before Solo Sikoa removes the referee. That reaction demonstrates the drama the match might have sustained with less certainty around the champion.

The men's Rumble benefits enormously from the final four. Gunther, Drew McIntyre, Punk and Cody feel like four plausible WrestleMania-level choices, and the camera repeatedly showing Roman Reigns and Seth "Freakin" Rollins watching from separate suites gives the final stretch a useful sense of consequence. Cody pointing directly at Roman after winning supplies the correct closing image even if the storyline will briefly detour afterward.

Cody Rhodes' victory is the event's largest historical marker. He becomes the first man since Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1997 and 1998 to win consecutive Royal Rumble matches and only the fourth wrestler overall to accomplish the feat. More importantly, the win keeps the unfinished WrestleMania 39 story alive until Cody ultimately defeats Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL.

Bayley's win is similarly important. She sets a new women's Royal Rumble longevity mark at 1:03:03 and uses the victory to begin the final break from Damage CTRL before challenging IYO SKY at WrestleMania. The Rumble therefore launches both eventual WrestleMania world-title stories that will define the spring.

The event also contains Jade Cargill's WWE in-ring debut and Jordynne Grace's surprise appearance while holding the TNA Knockouts World Championship. Grace's entrance is an early public signal of a more open WWE relationship with outside promotions, while Jade's debut begins the company's long-term investment in her presentation.

CM Punk's return to televised WWE competition is historically significant even though the night turns cruel afterward. Punk tears his right triceps during the men's Rumble, misses WrestleMania XL and begins a long feud with Drew McIntyre that becomes one of WWE's defining programs later in 2024. The injury changes WrestleMania plans but creates another major story.

The corporate timing also cannot be separated completely from the event. McMahon's resignation from TKO one day earlier marks the end of his formal role in the company, placing Royal Rumble 2024 at the beginning of a visibly different institutional period for WWE.
