Royal Rumble 2021: Bianca Belair and Edge Give an Empty Building Two Huge Moments

The Kickoff title match is competent until the storyline machinery overwhelms it. Asuka and Charlotte Flair have enough offense to create several believable momentum swings, and Shayna Baszler remains the cleanest worker whenever the match settles into a normal tag structure. The problem is that Ric Flair and Lacey Evans become increasingly central to the finish. Evans breaks Charlotte's Figure Eight, then lands the Women's Right behind the referee's attention, allowing Nia Jax to hit the leg drop and regain the championships with Baszler. The title change has consequence, but the wrestling becomes secondary to a Raw storyline that makes the finish feel busier than the match deserves.

McIntyre and Goldberg work exactly the match their circumstances require: a short collision built almost entirely around signature offense and credibility. The pre-bell brawl gives Goldberg an early advantage when he drives McIntyre through the barricade, but the official match lasts barely two and a half minutes. McIntyre survives multiple Spears and a Jackhammer, then avoids another Spear and lands the Claymore for the clean retention. There is almost no conventional match structure, yet the purpose is clear. McIntyre beats a protected legend decisively, Goldberg endorses him afterward, and WWE avoids stretching a limited formula beyond its useful length.

Banks and Carmella deliver a strong secondary title match that benefits from having already established their chemistry at TLC. Carmella works with more confidence than her positioning on the card might suggest, repeatedly cutting off Banks and using Reginald's presence to create openings without allowing him to completely dominate the story. Once the referee ejects Reginald, the match becomes cleaner and the champion gradually takes control. Banks survives Carmella's late offense, transitions into the Bank Statement and forces the submission. The result is decisive, the feud reaches a natural endpoint, and Carmella leaves the program looking more credible than when it began.

The women's Royal Rumble succeeds because Bianca Belair's journey gives nearly an hour of action a coherent center. Belair enters third, survives long enough to eliminate Bayley, and eventually reaches the final stretch opposite Rhea Ripley after both women eliminate Charlotte Flair. The match has its detours, including Billie Kay's comedy, the 24/7 Championship sequence and several nostalgia appearances, but the strongest material consistently returns to active roster stories. The final Belair-Ripley sequence is especially good because it allows both women to look like future main-event players before Belair scores the final elimination. Her emotional celebration turns a strong Rumble into a genuine star-making moment.

Reigns and Owens wrestle a violent Last Man Standing match that feels like the natural escalation of their TLC rivalry. The ThunderDome environment becomes part of the match as they fight around the production area, trade heavy shots with the steel steps, and use large set pieces rather than simply repeating ringside weapon spots. Reigns driving a golf cart into Owens and Owens answering with a senton from a forklift create memorable visuals without making the entire match feel like stunt choreography. The handcuff sequence near the finish is visibly messy when the referee stops counting while Heyman struggles with the lock, but the match recovers when Reigns applies the Guillotine and leaves Owens unable to stand.

The men's Royal Rumble is built around Edge's endurance and the possibility that Randy Orton's early injury angle will return to haunt him. Edge enters first and Orton second, but the middle of the match broadens effectively with Damian Priest's strong showing, Kane's surprise appearance, Christian's emotional return, and Seth Rollins re-entering the WWE picture. The final stretch narrows back to Edge, Christian, Rollins, Braun Strowman and the hidden Orton. After Edge eliminates Rollins, Orton returns and immediately hits the RKO, but Edge reverses the attempted elimination and wins from the number-one position. The match has strong story architecture even if some middle stretches lack the urgency of the women's Rumble.
