Survivor Series: WarGames 2025: A Stadium Full of Stars, and a Finish Looking for an Answer

Booking Verdict Grade: C+. Dominik Mysterio regaining the Intercontinental Championship is the cleanest strategic decision on the card even though the execution is gloriously dirty. Cena had won the championship only weeks earlier, Dominik needed the belt back if the larger Judgment Day story was continuing, and Cena did not need a successful title defense on his final PLE. Liv Morgan returning to help Dominik also reconnects one of WWE's more productive character pairings after her injury absence.

Stephanie Vaquer retaining over Nikki Bella is equally obvious and equally correct. Nikki functions as a recognizable challenger, but nothing in the build suggests a title change would improve the division. The match exists to give Vaquer a defense on a major stadium show and to move Nikki's heel story forward. It succeeds at that limited assignment.

The women's WarGames finish is sensible: AJ Lee submits Becky Lynch, continuing a rivalry that had already defined part of the fall. The larger structure is more debatable. The babyface team has so much star power that the result feels heavily signposted, and the match lacks enough near-fall jeopardy after everybody enters to make the heels feel close to winning. The spectacle is large; the competitive uncertainty is small.

The men's match is where the booking grade falls. The Vision side needs the victory far more than a team containing Punk, Cody and Roman, so Breakker pinning Punk is useful. The masked-man route, however, transfers attention away from Breakker at the exact moment the pin should elevate him. Instead of ending with Bron Breakker defeating the World Heavyweight Champion, the audience leaves discussing who wore the hood.

That is classic television cliffhanger logic attached to a premium-event main event. It creates another question, but WarGames has already spent forty minutes asking whether these ten men can settle anything. A finish can build Monday without making Saturday feel unfinished. This one struggles to do both.

Crowd & Presentation Grade: B. Petco Park gives Survivor Series a legitimately different visual identity. The double-ring cage inside a baseball stadium looks enormous, entrances stretch across the field, and WWE's fireworks and lighting make the event feel closer to WrestleMania scale than the traditional November arena show.

The tradeoff is acoustics. Open-air stadiums do not hold crowd noise the way compact arenas do, and several contemporary reviewers noted stretches where reactions sounded flatter than the attendance figure suggested. Cena's entrance, Jey Uso's singalong and the biggest Roman/Brock interactions still register strongly, but the atmosphere is inconsistent rather than relentless.

The WarGames entrance procedure is another presentation issue. WWE did not use the traditional shark cages for waiting competitors, meaning wrestlers emerged from backstage at their scheduled intervals. The entrances take time, the match clock waits, and the rhythm repeatedly pauses while another star makes the long stadium walk. Bleacher Report specifically identified the missing shark cages as a poor creative/presentation choice because they normally keep every participant visually connected to the match.

Cena's farewell presentation is handled much better. The commentary treats the match as his final PLE without turning every second into a memorial service, and the post-match ovation gives him a meaningful exit after putting Dominik over. The show also benefits from the sheer visual variety of IYO SKY's trash-can dive, Liv Morgan's return and Brock Lesnar's entrance in a giant stadium.

WrestleFile lands at C+ / 6.9 because the production scale is undeniable and several individual moments look fantastic. The show just never generates the sustained stadium atmosphere its attendance and lineup promise.

Historical Significance Grade: B. Survivor Series 2025 matters for several reasons independent of match quality. It is the first Survivor Series held outdoors, the first in a stadium, the first at a Major League Baseball ballpark, and the first edition in the United States distributed through WWE's new ESPN streaming arrangement.

It is also John Cena's final premium live event as an active wrestler. Dominik Mysterio beating Cena for the Intercontinental Championship therefore becomes the last PLE result of Cena's in-ring career, while Liv Morgan's return becomes attached permanently to that milestone.

The men's WarGames match is historically notable for its concentration of top-level star power. Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Brock Lesnar and the Usos share a single match with Breakker, Reed, McIntyre and Logan Paul. That does not make the match great by default, but it makes the lineup a useful snapshot of WWE's hierarchy at the end of 2025.

The event also advances Bron Breakker's position by having him pin Punk and introduces the Austin Theory mystery-man angle that ultimately folds Theory into The Vision. On the women's side, AJ Lee's return run continues in a major stipulation match and she scores the deciding submission over Becky Lynch.

The grade stops at B because the event is historically notable more for circumstances, distribution and career timing than for a single transformative wrestling moment. It documents a transition point in WWE exceptionally well. It does not become one of the defining Survivor Series because of the wrestling itself.
