Royal Rumble 2026: Two Right Winners, One Great Goodbye, and a Rumble That Plays It Safe

Booking Verdict Grade: B+. Liv Morgan winning the women's Rumble is the cleanest decision on the show. She had already been runner-up twice, remained one of the division's most established television characters and had an obvious WrestleMania path. The finish also creates tension with Raquel Rodriguez when Morgan opportunistically eliminates her stablemate, while Tiffany Stratton and Sol Ruca both receive strong final-three visibility. Lash Legend's five-elimination run is exactly how a Rumble should create somebody without requiring that person to win.

Gunther defeating AJ Styles is harder emotionally and stronger creatively. The match does not use a fluke, countout or retirement loophole. Gunther beats Styles by putting him to sleep after Styles has already thrown essentially his entire offense at him. That makes Gunther more dangerous while allowing Styles to lose through accumulated damage rather than humiliation. The post-match glove tease gives the audience a goodbye without forcing a melodramatic retirement ritual in the ring.

Drew McIntyre retaining is predictable but correct. He had only recently regained the championship, and Sami Zayn's role is to make the audience believe for several near falls that the timing might not matter. The back injury provides a coherent match story, and McIntyre's final sequence of Claymores makes the champion look decisive rather than lucky.

Roman Reigns winning the men's Rumble is defensible and useful, but the route is cluttered. Oba Femi's dominant opening is excellent. Brock Lesnar eliminating Femi creates a major confrontation. LA Knight returning to clear out Vision members works. Gunther entering at thirty after retiring Styles makes him look absurdly durable. But the masked attack on Breakker and McIntyre eliminating Cody Rhodes from outside the match both ask the Rumble to carry unrelated storyline machinery. Reigns ultimately eliminating Gunther is a strong final image, yet the match occasionally feels as if every WrestleMania writer was allowed one idea and nobody was asked to leave anything on the whiteboard.

Crowd & Presentation Grade: B+. The purpose-built Riyadh stadium gives Royal Rumble 2026 a massive visual canvas, and WWE knows how to fill a canvas with entrances, pyro and twenty different kinds of light. The downside is that the experimental LED lighting on the seats reportedly made parts of the stadium look emptier on television than the company said they actually were. That is a strange production failure for a company whose stadium presentation is normally engineered within an inch of its life.

The crowd is strongest for the wrestlers with established Saudi followings and for the major surprise beats. Sami Zayn is treated as a hometown-level favorite in the title match. AJ Styles receives a sustained farewell response. The Bellas' reunion, LA Knight's return, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and the Oba Femi confrontations all produce the kind of reactions a Rumble needs because so much of the format depends on thirty-second emotional resets.

The four-match structure again helps WWE. A sixty-seven-minute women's Rumble and a nearly hour-long men's Rumble are already two feature films with countdown clocks. Putting only two singles matches between them keeps the card from becoming a test of lumbar durability. Gunther-Styles gets enough time to become serious without being rushed, and McIntyre-Zayn sits in a more compact sixteen-minute slot.

The men's match has one additional presentation blemish: the live graphics briefly suggested a number thirty-one entrant after Gunther entered at thirty. Post-event reporting described it as a graphics-program error rather than a hidden participant. It is minor, but Royal Rumble is one of the few matches where an entry number is part of the suspense architecture, so putting the wrong number on a giant stadium screen is roughly the wrestling equivalent of accidentally displaying the final score during the third quarter.

Overall, the event looks expensive, the entrances feel important and the crowd gives the big moments enough life. The B-plus reflects a strong stadium spectacle with two oddly visible production mistakes.

Provisional Historical Significance Grade: B. Royal Rumble 2026 has several markers likely to remain useful even after the WrestleMania stories surrounding it become old news. It is the first traditional Royal Rumble held outside North America and the first Royal Rumble in WWE's U.S. ESPN premium-event era. Those are permanent changes in the event's geographic and distribution history.

Roman Reigns wins his second Royal Rumble, eleven years after his controversial 2015 victory, joining the small group of multiple-time winners. Liv Morgan wins the women's Royal Rumble for the first time after two previous runner-up finishes. Both victories become direct launch points for WrestleMania 42 title programs.

AJ Styles' retirement is the night's largest career marker. He made his WWE debut in the 2016 Royal Rumble and, ten years later, loses his final WWE match at the same event. Gunther becomes the wrestler who ends Styles' in-ring WWE career only weeks after ending John Cena's career, which further defines Gunther's 2025-26 character arc as the man who makes legends stop.

The men's Rumble also records several roster-transition moments. Oba Femi's dominant showing announces him on the main-roster stage. Royce Keys makes his WWE debut after his Powerhouse Hobbs run elsewhere. Sol Ruca and Lash Legend receive important exposure in the women's match, and the men's field includes AAA representation during WWE's expanded relationship with the promotion.

The significance remains provisional because some of these careers and programs are still developing. But the event already has enough fixed history - first traditional overseas Rumble, first ESPN-era Rumble, Styles' farewell, second Reigns win, first Morgan win - to sit comfortably in B territory even if neither Rumble match becomes an all-time favorite.
