Neville beating Rich Swann cleanly is the strongest forward-looking decision on the undercard because it launches the King of the Cruiserweights run that would define his 2017. Cena beating Styles also works because the result is attached to a classic rather than a coronation shortcut; Styles leaves the match looking every bit like a top star despite losing. Kevin Owens retaining against Roman Reigns through Braun Strowman's interference is less clean, but it protects Reigns while giving Strowman a direct path toward Fastlane. Charlotte's win over Bayley maintains her singles pay-per-view streak without damaging Bayley permanently.

The Rumble booking is more debatable. Braun Strowman's seven eliminations make him feel like the match's first breakout force, Goldberg eliminating Brock Lesnar in seconds advances their WrestleMania program, and Roman Reigns eliminating The Undertaker creates another major match. Randy Orton winning is logical inside the Wyatt Family story, but it is not the kind of choice that makes the event feel newly transformed. The final two being Orton and Reigns also produces relief more than discovery. The show gets almost every major WrestleMania chess piece where WWE wants it; the tradeoff is that the Rumble winner feels more functional than revelatory.

Crowd and Presentation earns an A- because the Alamodome gives Royal Rumble 2017 a major-event scale from the opening bell. The building sounds enormous during Cena-Styles, with dueling chants and increasingly loud reactions to every near fall. Owens-Reigns benefits from the same size because the table spots and Jericho shark-cage visual feel bigger in a stadium environment. Neville's transformation into a colder, more dangerous challenger is immediately understood by the audience, and the Rumble entrances for Goldberg, Lesnar, Undertaker, and Reigns create the night's loudest bursts. The crowd is not uniformly positive, but it is almost always engaged.

The strongest presentation decision is treating Cena-Styles like history without allowing the milestone to overwhelm the match itself. The ring introductions, crowd split, championship stakes, and post-match celebration all feel important because the wrestling earns them. The Rumble match is visually impressive, and WWE uses the wide stadium shots effectively whenever a major entrant arrives. The only presentation weakness is pacing during the early Rumble stretch, where the match feels temporarily small inside such a large building. Once Strowman begins throwing people out and the legends arrive, the scale matches the setting again.

Historical Significance earns a B because the event creates several durable WWE milestones. John Cena defeats AJ Styles to win the WWE Championship and reaches the 16-world-title number WWE officially associates with Ric Flair, turning the match into one of the defining championship moments of Cena's career. Randy Orton becomes a two-time Royal Rumble winner, Neville begins his Cruiserweight Championship reign, and Braun Strowman records seven eliminations during the stretch that establishes him as a singles monster. The Rumble also gives Goldberg another decisive advantage over Brock Lesnar and creates the Roman Reigns-Undertaker issue that leads directly to WrestleMania 33.

The event is also the final Royal Rumble to feature only the men's Rumble match, because WWE introduces the women's Royal Rumble the following year. That makes 2017 the closing chapter of the event's original one-Rumble format. Cena-Styles remains one of the most acclaimed WWE matches of the era, receiving 4.75 stars from Dave Meltzer and a full five stars from TJR Wrestling.
